CHIEFS: Smith solid, Mahomes throws first touchdown in loss to 49ers

Preseason openers can sometimes be snoozers, especially in the second half.

But while it may be a while before we see Mahomes on the field in a game that matters, he's turning heads on the practice field and will be perhaps the most important player to watch when the Chiefs open the preseason on Friday night against the 49ers. Mahomes was awarded the third quarter as he was listed as the third-string quarterback on the team's initial depth chart.

In the meantime, the Chiefs will be happy to allow incumbent starter Alex Smith - who completed 4 of 6 passes for 48 yards and has also had a fine camp - to maintain the reins of the offense. Ironically, Mahomes' debut will be somewhat similar to when he played his first game at Texas Tech.

He didn't look out of place at all and almost came up with an interception to kill Kansas City's first scoring drive. "A lot of friends and family will be there so I'm excited".

So far Mahomes has looked solid. He was a starter and admitted to putting too much pressure on himself. "I think he is more natural and has a better grasp on it".

Tonight officially marks the start of the Kyle Shanahan/John Lynch era in Santa Clara, although the two have been hard at work trying to resurrect the team from an abysmal 2-14 season a year ago. So for now, Mahomes' biggest concern is adjusting to the pro game. The only difference in the packages is whether or not you receive commercials. "When you have Tyreek (Hill) - I didn't have that speed at Texas Tech - so you have to have a little more air underneath it and let him go get it". As the deeper team, the Chiefs won't see many rookies in the game until the second half, specifically quarterback Patrick Mahomes in the third quarter. If you're looking for ways to watch 49ers vs Chiefs online, we've got them! Yes, technically, it's preseason football, but it's meaningful football all the same.

"We've got to clean up the penalties", Shanahan said at halftime.
