First, the Bills sent their number one receiver, Sammy Watkins, and a 6th round draft pick in the 2018 NFL Draft to the Los Angeles Rams for cornerback E.J. Gaines and a 2nd round pick in the 2018 NFL Draft. The Ravens say offensive lineman Alex Lewis will miss this season with a shoulder injury and rookie Tim White will have season-ending surgery on his thumb. If guys like that, two starters including one who was a No. 4 overall draft pick just three years ago, can be dealt, then anybody is in play. That didn't stop him from public declarations that he was ready to cash in on a massive contract.
In sum, the Bills swapped cornerbacks (Gaines for Darby) and receivers (Matthews for Watson) while netting additional second- and third-round picks in 2018. Jacksonville released left tackle Branden Albert, 32, who is now free to sign with any other National Football League team. End Jerry Hughes and tackles Marcell Dareus and Kyle Williams are all back, while 2016 first-rounder Shaq Lawson rounds out a potent front four. He ranks first in receptions (225) and third in receiving yards (2,673) among Eagles in their first three years and is one of only five players in National Football League history with 65-plus receptions and 800-plus receiving yards in each of their first three seasons, joining a club that includes Randy Moss, Odell Beckham Jr., Mike Evans and A.J. Green.
For now, that looks like good work from first-year general manager Brandon Beane, who was a candidate for the 49ers' opening last winter before they settled on John Lynch.
And as the Rams sought refuge in their Coliseum locker room New Year's Day, they knew they had to address the folly of Fisher's approach in order to ensure Goff had a viable, available path to reach his ceiling.
Jordan Matthews forged a strong connection to Carson Wentz, but now Matthews is gone, leaving the Eagles quarterback looking for targets. Mathews' production and the fact that he's only 26 during the 2018 season might make him the most attractive of the bunch considering Watkins' durability issues.
Darby lands in the super-aggressive, blitz-heavy scheme of Jim Schwartz in Philadelphia and that sparks optimism for his future value, but regular assignments against division rivals Dez Bryant (Cowboys) and Beckham (Giants) are poison pills. Darby, a man-coverage specialist, is coming off a down sophomore campaign, after his 21 passes defensed as a second-round rookie in 2015 ranked fifth in the NFL. He can cover the slot, tight end as a linebacker or blitz depending on the formation.
But McDermott appears to have an abundance of control and his no-nonsense style could prove a boon in helping the Bills return to contender status. The 2018 draft is supposed to be deeper at quarterback. QB Tyrod Taylor will have to rely more than ever on McCoy in the offense in the early going as he starts to build a new rapport with the incoming Jordan Matthews. The Rams signed Woods to a 5-year, $34 million deal in free agency. He is entering the final year of his deal.
