At a club of United's ambitions, the cup wins over the last two seasons were enough to placate supporters, but not enough to truly satisfy them. For the first time in 20 years, Arsene Wenger's side will be missing from the Champions League as a effect of its fifth-place Premier League finish.

It is very hard to see Mourinho's side being so mediocre again in the league this time around, however, and they have bought solidly this summer.

Mourinho signed the Brazilian for Chelsea back in the summer of 2013, but Willian insists he is happy at Chelsea. But Mourinho will know that the results were unimportant; creating the spirit within his team, building a mentality, and emulating what he has been doing for so many years was the goal.

However, at the start of the window the Portuguese tactician identified four players to executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward in order to bolster his squad - meaning the job is only 75% complete, but Mourinho is adamant he won't cry if his final target fails to arrive before the end of the month.

How optimistic or pessimistic are you for the new season, and why?

"He's settled in the team like he was there for the whole of pre-season".

Playing three at the back may enable Guardiola to associate Aguero and Jesus in attack, after he generally used a single-striker system last season following Jesus's arrival in January.

"I just think he was very clear showing that what he did a year ago was not enough for him".

What are your aims for the season? His coach will be expecting the Belgian striker to deliver just as Zlatan Ibrahimovic did last season, and he is already doing so. I don't say the league because I have been in this league a long time.

"We haven't been able to beat them yet but there's always a first time and it would be nice to think it would be Friday night".

Axel Tuanzebe and Andreas Pereira should both see valuable minutes this season, especially the latter. Ander Herrera sits in front of him as the engine in midfield, with Pogba given more of a free role to roam forward.

"It would be better to lose two or three but win three or four more and then have six or eight more points and then a different position in the table".

How do you rate Liverpool's chances heading into the season?

"I think everybody is in Europe".

SOCCEROOS stars Aaron Mooy and Mat Ryan will crack Australia's English Premier League half-century when the world's richest league kicks off.

Are you ever envious of the football the Reds play compared to United, or is winning really all that matters?

"He's learning all the time, and I don't think anybody can dispute what a brilliant manager he is", said Hughton of Guardiola.

He has been given the funds to inject quality into his team, to address the problems David Moyes and Louis van Gaal failed to correct.
