In the aftermath of Hurricane Irma, an estimated 4.4 million Florida Power and Light customers statewide were left without electricity, challenging FPL and other power companies to try to restore power as quickly as possible in all corners of Florida.

And despite that, some Floridians have chose to return to their state to be together.

On Tuesday morning, the remnants of Irma were blowing through Alabama and MS after drenching Georgia.

One of the biggest lingering problems was widespread power outages, with utilities reporting more than 7.4 million homes and businesses without electricity in Florida and neighbouring states.

"These short-lived tornadoes will continue to develop across parts of SC and Georgia on Monday", Kottlowski said.

At 6pm GMT, its centre had moved into southern Georgia, the National Hurricane Center said. Tybee Island, off Savannah's coast and with a population of about 3,100, remained closed on Tuesday, as bridges leading to the island have not been inspected.

"We are finding some remains", she said in an interview with CNN.

The one-two punch of Harvey and Irma will reportedly dwarf the crushing costs of many recent storms to hit the country. In total, at least 39 people have lost their lives in the hurricane.

The hurricane made USA landfall twice on Sunday, in the Florida Keys and at Marco Island.

"After visiting shelters this week and talking to people who evacuated due to Hurricane Irma, the number one thing I heard from families is that they want their power back on", Scott said. At least 35 people in the Caribbean were killed, including 10 in Cuba.

On Monday, Irma brought heavy rain and wind through the northern Florida city of Jacksonville as well as SC and Georgia.

"The storm surge flooding in Miami is a mere fraction of what would have happened if the core of the storm had been further east", Rick Knabb, former director of the National Hurricane Center, said in a tweet. A 10-foot storm surge at sea level can submerge the first floor of a building in minutes.

"I have water, I have food, I have dogs, and I can't get to my house!" one homeowner said to officers at the checkpoint.

Winter Park police spokesman Garvin McComie says officers responded Monday morning following reports of a man lying in the roadway. Although downtown Fort Lauderdale was spared major damage, trees were uprooted throughout the area.

10 people have been killed in Florida, Georgia and SC. In Sandy Springs, a man died while lying in bed after a large tree broke and fell on his home, the Sandy Springs Mayor said.

Dramatic before and after footage of the beach on the tropical island group show the extent of the damage caused by Irma and the serenity that followed.
