Mahant Das: Ayodhya case main litigant dies at 89

Chief of Ayodhya's Nirmohi Akhara and oldest litigant in Ram Janmbhoomi-Babri Masjid case, Mahant Bhaskar Das, breathed his last in Ayodhya on Saturday.

He was cremated at Tulsi Das on Saturday afternoon.

Bhaskar Das was the Hindu claimant in Ram Mandir-Babri Masjid dispute. He was a good friend of Hashim Ansari, the oldest litigant and his opponent in the case, who passed away in July, last year.

Das, who staunchly pushed for the construction of the Ram Temple in Ayodhya, died of heart attack. "Mahant Bhaskar Das's death is a blow to communal harmony in Ayodhya-Faizabad twin towns", said a Muslim leader Captain Afzal Ahmad Khan.

According to the Newspaper, Bhaskar Das was also the head priest of another Hanuman Garhi temple in Faizabad city and he was also sarpanch of Nirmohi Akhara.Das died at a hospital in Faizabad where he was admitted Friday evening.

According to Hindustan Times report, his body has been placed at the Naka Hanuman Gadhi for people to pay tributes.

In 1959, Nirmohi Akhada's mahant Raghunath Das had filed a case claiming the Ram Janmabhoomi.

After the Lucknow bench of the Allahabad High Court gave a verdict in the case on September 30, 2010, Bhaskar Das filed a petition in the Supreme Court for ownership of the entire Ramjanmabhoomi premises.
