SIU names teens killed in Highway 6 crash


The Special Investigations Unit says 15-year-old Nathan Wehrle of Cambridge and 16-year-old Taryn Hewitt of London were killed when their auto hit the truck head-on in rural Hamilton.

Officials with the Special Investigations Unit (SIU) released the names of the deceased on Saturday, with consent from the next of kin.

There were earlier reports that indicated the Waterloo Regional Police were investigating an abduction which sparked the chase between officers and the vehicle.

On Thursday Waterloo Regional Police said they were following the vehicle from King Street East in Cambridge after responding to call for a possible abduction or assault.

The officer tried to pull over the vehicle on King St E in Cambridge but it failed to stop. Police say the two were known to each other. 6 in rural Hamilton with Waterloo police in pursuit when the vehicle they were in collided head-on with a transport truck just before 10 a.m. Thursday.

The SIU, a civilian agency, is called in by police to investigate when incidents involving police and civilians result in a death, serious injury or allegations of sexual assault.
