When it comes to scouting, Wilcox said Girl Scouts is the best positioned girls leadership program nationally and in Western New York. "We've had females involved in our co-ed, ages 14 through the age of 20, career development programs called "Exploring" since its inception in the 1950s".

Cub Scout dens will be single‐gender, either all boys or all girls.

The Boy Scouts of America, which was the target of progressive ire over its decades long resistance to changing rules that prohibited gay scouts and troop leaders, has made significant moves to open up its membership in recent years.

Mark Conrad, scout executive for the Texas Trails Council of Boy Scouts, said it's up to each pack on whether to allow girls.

The Boy Scouts, founded in 1908 in Britain and in the United States two years later, has for decades been one of the country's most prominent youth programs focused on character building, team work and outdoor skills.

Joy Wheeler, the CEO of the Girl Scouts of Northeast Kansas and Northwest Missouri, said the Boy Scouts' decision to welcome girls could negatively impact their recruitment efforts in the future, but she believes their program is still appealing because it was made for girls, by girls.

"Girls Scouts have to get 80-plus hours of community service", Jenco said. Yet, Boy Scouts has been historically slow to adapt to changing cultural mores which has hurt its standing across the nation, the release points out.

Will Stone, the Scoutmaster of Troop 52, said that having a co-ed program benefits both the girls and boys in his 70-person troop, 16 of whom are girls.

Girl Scouts have been around for more than 100 years, just like Boy Scouts.

As for the Girl Scouts, they will continue doing what they're doing, she said. Instead of addressing systemic issues of continuing sexual assault, financial mismanagement and deficient programming, BSA's senior management wants to add an accelerant to the house fire by recruiting girls.

Eberspeaker said, "Every girl who is a Girl Scout has the opportunity to earn the Girl Scout Gold Award. and it is a very prestigious award".

"There's not always a care giver at home to leave the other children with", she said.

Girls have been participating in the high school level of the organization since 1971.

Wilcox said this is their membership season which makes it easier for girls to join during this time.
