Several NC prison employees injured, fires set in attempted prisoner escape

The North Carolina Department of Public Safety tweeted around 4 p.m. that the attempted escape happened at the Pasquotank Correctional Institution in Elizabeth City.

The Elizabeth City- Pasquotank Public Schools said several schools had been placed on lockdown.

An attempted escape was reported Thursday afternoon at a northeastern North Carolina state prison. Family of patients are being asked to avoid the Albemarle campus at this time. The lockdowns have since been lifted.

After school events and athletics at Northside, ECMS and PCHS have been cancelled.

Jerry Higgins, communications officer for the North Carolina Department of Public Safety, said he didn't know details about the employees' injuries, but that the situation is contained. If they did not, the bus driver took them back to the school. Students and staff now at these schools will not be released until we hear further from Emergency Management. Fires were set in the jail sewing plant and a few workers were harmed, as indicated by the tweet.

WAVY's Joe Fisher and Matt Gregory will have updates from Elizabeth City.
