ILMxLAB, Lucasfilm's immersive entertainment arm, and its partner, The Void, released more information Wednesday, Oct. 11, on their new multi-sensory and hyper-reality experience called "Star Wars: Secrets of the Empire".
To celebrate, Disney has released the first trailer for the room-wide, walk-around "Secrets of the Empire" experience, along with details of the story.
The Void got its start with a $50 Ghostbusters VR experience at Madam Tussauds in New York's Times Square a year ago, which was met with mixed reviews. Void co-founder Curtis Hickman noted that a true VR experience should include smell - so if you ever wondered what the Star Wars galaxy smells like, you may soon have your answer. "Your mission is to recover Imperial intelligence vital to the rebellion's survival", reads the official description.
Come January, visitors to Downtown Disney will have a chance to virtually experience what it's like going through a mission inside the Star Wars universe.
If nothing else, the new experience will help fill the gap while construction continues on Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge, the dedicated land within Disney's Hollywood Studios theme park, and the eventual "Star Wars" hotel on Walt Disney World property.
However, a promotional image for the experience shows everyone's favorite Rogue One droid, K-2SO, guiding children in Stormtrooper outfits through what appears to be an assault on Darth Vader's castle on Mustafar. Disguised as stormtroopers, grab your blaster, solve puzzles, and fight giant lava monsters in an effort to fulfill your team's orders. The VOID is a whole-body, fully immersive experience, with you, your friends and family walking around inside the action. Visitors will experience sight, sound, touch, and smell as they "walk into real-time virtual reality that combines interactive sets, real-time effects, and wonderful technology".
