'Sausage Party's' Conrad Vernon to Direct Animated 'Addams Family' Movie

Sausage Party helmer Conrad Vernon has signed on to direct an animated The Addams Family movie for MGM, Variety says.

Vernon will also produce the movie with Gail Berman, via her shingle The Jackal Group, and Alex Schwartz.

The Addams Family began as single-panel "gag illustrations" drawn by artist Charles Addams, which originally appeared in The New Yorker in 1938.

The macabre family is best known for their '60s television show, starring John Astin and Carolyn Jones.

Two of the three feature films produced in the 1990s, The Addams Family and Addams Family Values (with a killer cast that included Raul Julia, Anjelica Huston, and Christopher Lloyd) are tremendous fun, and feel a little closer to the humor of the original Charles Addams cartoons than the TV series did. The upcoming movie features the usual Addams Family characters, including the patriarch and matriarch of the family, Gomez and Morticia, their children Wednesday and Pugsley, and Grandmama.

MGM Studios announced this project back in 2013, setting writer Pamela Pettler (The Corpse Bride) to write the script. Andrew Mittman and Kevin Miserocchi were initially attached as producers at the time, but now they are executive producing, with MGM's executive director Tabitha Shick overseeing the project. Since then, Hollywood has been trying to bring The Addams Family back, with Tim Burton considering a stop-motion animated film as far back as 2010.

Vernon is an animation veteran who co-directed Shrek 2, Monsters vs Aliens and Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted. His latest film, Sausage Party, was a surprise R-rated hit that grossed more than $140 million worldwide. He is repped by UTA and Mosaic.
