Ivanka Trump: Tax Plan Benefits Families

"The Senate is still not there", Ms. Trump said on Fox News' "Fox & Friends".

Rep. Josh Gottheimer, a Democrat who represents parts of northern New Jersey's wealthy Bergen County, said his constituents would see tax hikes.

He said the effect of taking away deductions for state income and sales taxes would be offset by lower rates overall and the elimination of the alternative minimum tax. The House bill eliminates most of SALT except for a property tax deduction capped at $10,000.

Federal deductions for state and local taxes make up 8.7% of adjusted gross income for New Jersey filers, according to an analysis by the Tax Foundation. She criticized the tax plan afterward. The Senate's bill eliminates the deduction entirely. "It will slash our ability to deduct our state and local taxes, our mortgages by 50 percent and will drive property values down by more than 10 percent".

Proposals in Congress pose problems for New Jersey, where property taxes are among the nation's highest.

Ireland was one of the 30 people gathered outside the fire hall to protest the tax reform plan.

The event came the same day Democratic Gov. -elect Phil Murphy held an event in Newark with Democratic lawmakers to criticize the plan.

He admitted he "misspoke" when he said that "nobody in the middle class is going to get a tax increase".

"We just can't let this happen".

"This is not reform", Murphy said. "They have to look at the devastation to their own districts".

Republicans in the full House are preparing to vote on their plan later this week. We tax on worldwide income but people don't have to pay those taxes if the money stays off shore.

"Thus this bill is not something I could support in its current form".

MacArthur said the House bill won his support after the $10,000 property tax deduction cap was included.

On Monday morning, First Daughter Ivanka Trump and Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin discussed tax reform with Rep. Tom MacArthur (R-NJ) at an event in Berkeley Township, New Jersey.

Of note is the expansion of child tax credits and credits for non-child dependents, such as elderly family members living with you, she said.

Mr. Gottheimer, whose district includes many Republican voters, said he supports some aspects of the proposed tax overhaul, such as lowering the corporate tax rate, and measures that would encourage repatriation of cash held overseas. "We really need tax reform in this country". "As you know, town halls can get out of control".

White House counselor Kellyanne Conway is expected to be in the state today for a tax-related event. "That's what this is all about".
