Jimmy Fallon holds back tears as he pays tribute to late mother

The song's lyrics proved appropriate to Fallon's emotional return, particularly this line: "You squeeze my hand three times in the back of the taxi / I can tell that it's gonna be a long road / I'll be there if you're the toast of the town, babe / Or if you strike out and you're crawling home".

Holding back tears, he recalled a treasured childhood memory with his mother.

"I grabbed her hand and squeezed, 'I love you, ' and I just knew we were in trouble". He marked his mother's passing with a teary-eyed tribute to the woman he calls "the best audience".

The emotional host shared a story about his mother squeezing his hand three times to signify, "I love you", when he was a child.

Fallon expressed gratitude for all the support he had received all week long.

He added, "We're going to continue to work really hard to bring some light and some laughter into the world". Thank you for watching.

A family spokesperson said Fallon and other loved ones were by his mother's bedside when she died on November 4 from an undisclosed illness at NYU Langone Medical Center in New York City. "Thank you for helping me and my family recover from this loss".

Gloria Fallon died "peacefully" on 4 November in hospital in NY.
