Soldier, militant killed in ongoing Kulgam gunfight

Security forces were fighting militants in south Kashmir's Pulwama and Kulgam districts since early Tuesday, officials said, hours after two militants were killed in an encounter in north Kashmir's Handwara. The security forces gunned down three terrorists in a fierce retaliation.

A gunfight was triggered on Tuesday after militants started firing upon security forces who were conducting search operations in a suspected spot.

A spokesperson of the Kashmir police said, "The police, army and CRPF (Central Reserve Police Force) are on the job".

However, when the security forces were moving towards particular area, militants opened fire, they said.

The operation was going on when last reports came in.

Security forces launched a cordon and search operation in Nowbug Kund village in Qazigund area of Kulgam this morning after receiving specific information about the presence of militants in the area, a police spokesman said.

The two militants had attacked a police party on Monday evening, according to The Hindu. The Jammu and Kashmir Police and 42 Rashtriya Rifles are retaliating strongly and effectively.
