British YouTuber criticised for allegedly price-gouging Christmas calendar

"Once that product is done and I am happy with it, the retailer can decide how much they sell that for, that's completely outside of my decision making".

One Twitter user added up what the 12 items would cost at individually at Primark and Amazon and alleged that it would only cost around £22 - less than half what Zoella is charging for her calendar.

The calendar contains a bauble, a small packet of confetti, a star-shaped cookie cutter, a packet of seven stickers, a small bag, a 130g "Festive Cookie" candle, a 30ml "Christmas Clementine" room spray, a pen, a fluffy key ring, a gingerbread man-shaped cookie cutter, a mini notepad and a 130g "Cozy Christmas" candle.

The entire contents of the advent calendar, which is being sold at Boots and has received an overall rating of one and a half stars so far, can be purchased for about £20 separately. But over the past week, many have questioned the value of the calendar - which only includes 12 low-value gifts - and the ethics of selling something at that cost to her young fans.

Zoella explained that she felt "just as let down" as her fans, before reasserting that the price is set by the retailer, not her. "£50 for a poorly designed 12 day cheap advent calendar is an insult to anyone who has ever supported her", said another.

Parents have slammed the calendar created by the beauty vlogger as "tat" and "massively overpriced".

Another said: "Don't get me wrong, I love Zoella but you can't deny how absolutely ridiculous that advent calendar is".

Zoe Sugg, aka Zoella, was crowned the most powerful beauty player in Forbes' 2017 list of social media stars and has her own waxwork in Madame Tussauds.

After the controversy about the price of the calendar blew up, a spokeswoman for Zoella Lifestyle said "Zoe is incredibly proud of the Christmas collection and excited to see it in store".

Last night Boots released a statement saying it would be selling the calendar for £25 rather than £50 from tomorrow as part of its Christmas promotions.

Zoella has yet to address the backlash against her.

But the damage was already done for many reviewers on the Boots website. Zoella has harnessed a loyal fanbase alongside her boyfriend and fellow YouTuber Alfie Deyes.
