Redskins place Rob Kelley on IR, sign RB Byron Marshall

Samaje Perine will be employed as the Redskins' RB1 on early downs in the starter's absence.

Both injuries occurred during the loss to the Minnesota Vikings. His signing by the Redskins became necessary with the leg and ankle injuries to starting running back Robert Kelley, who along with former starting middle linebacker Will Compton, were both placed on the Reserve/Injured List.

With Kelley already expected to miss multiple games, Gruden said the team will decide later in the week whether they will place him on injured reserve, ending his 2017 season.

It effectively ends what has been a disappointing season for Kelley, as he compiled just 194 yards on 62 carries with three touchdowns and four catches for 18 receiving yards in seven games. The 2017 fourth-round pick is now averaging just 3.2 yards per carry (210 yards on 66 attempts), but Gruden believes his fresh legs and powerful running style could be an issue against exhausted defenses late in the season. Compton sprained a foot. Chris Thompson could also pick up a bit of extra work, and the Redskins presumably will sign a third running back. Martrell Spaight will take over for Compton.

Drafted in the fifth round of the 2014 NFL Draft of Princeton, Reid has appeared in 34 games recording 36 tackles along with three sacks, two passes defensed and two fumbles recovered.
