Rochester woman charged with murder in death of 10-day-old baby

A NY woman was accused Monday of intentionally drowning her infant son in a bathtub in her Rochester apartment.

A Rochester woman faces murder charges after police said she admitted to intentionally drowning her 10-day-old child.

Police say a 10-day-old baby was found unresponsive inside a Locust Street home Monday afternoon.

Police say that when police arrived on scene on Locust Street around 2:30 p.m. Monday, they were told the child was found in bathtub of the home.

"The defendant with intent to cause the infant's death left her infant son submerged in the bath water for a period of 1 to 2 hours", read the felony complaint. He was taken to Rochester General Hospital where officers say he later died.

Mitchell was taken into custody and questioned by investigators at the Public Safety Building, roughly two miles away from her Rochester residence.

Police say the boy's mother, 25-year-old Markiya Mitchell, admitted to intentionally drowning her infant.

Mitchell is expected to return to court Friday for a preliminary hearing as additional charges are considered for her case.

Markiya Mitchell, 25, was put into custody for alleged intentions to harm infant son.
