The Salvation Army is also hosting a Thanksgiving Day Community Meal on November 23 from 11 a.m.to 1 p.m.at the Salvation Army Chesapeake Energy Center of Hope, located at 1001 N. Pennsylvania Ave. "People come in for help nearly every day".

Rowland is in charge of organizing the effort in 17 MI counties, including Huron.

As of November 23, kettles will be set up Foodland, Sobeys and Harbax Home Hardware in Glace Bay and beginning December 1, kettles will also be placed at Atlantic Superstore, the Glace Bay liquor store and the Sterling Mall.

"It's about five shifts per day per location", Sadowy said.

As always, finding enough volunteers to fill the entire five-week effort is challenging.

The Salvation Army is accepting applications for holiday assistance from families of Wayne, Oakland and Macomb Counties.

"We have a new program we just launched, our Nourish program, which is helping individuals build life skills and cooking and things like that, and much more, and even summer camps", Sadowy said.

The Friday breakfast raised close to $60,000, just short of the organization's goal, but donations are still being collected, Shiflett said.

"The money raised in the Red Kettles creates a year of hope for families and individuals in need", said Maj. Fjellman said a red kettle accompanied by a volunteer ringing bells brings in far more donations than a kettle sitting solo.

Rowland said that amount was spread across 47 households for rent/mortgage payments to avoid eviction and homelessness, utility bills, food vouchers and other various household needs.
