NHL Capsules: Tom Wilson, Alex Ovechkin help Capitals rout Blackhawks 6-2

Blackhawks goalie Jean-Francois Berube is in the foreground.

Nicklas Backstrom's goalless drought is finally over.

Wayne Simmonds had a goal and an assist, and Jordan Weal, Dale Weise and Michael Raffl also scored for the Flyers, who were on an 0-5-5 run before Monday.

That capped Washington's first-line offensive outburst, a goal from each member in a 3:28 span in the first period. He has played five games at Washington, four at Capital One Arena and one at Nationals Park.

Two of them returned the favor Wednesday night. "That line carried us tonight".

Chicago is 6-13 in their last 19 games on the road and 3-14 in their last 17 against a team with a winning record while the Capitals are 10-4 in their last 14 Wednesday games and 37-14 intheir last 51 home games. Capitals RW T.J. Oshie (upper body) did not play.

You managed to jump out to an early 3-0 lead in the first period after scoring three times in roughly three-and-a-half minutes.

This successful stretch for the Capitals has coincided with the team's longest homestand of the season and the reunion of Ovechkin and Backstrom. Kane has never scored a goal AT Washington.

The lineup tweak worked wonders.

Though Backstrom has steadily been accumulating assists, he entered Wednesday night's game without a goal since October 14, Washington's sixth game of the season. Ovechkin is the 11 player in National Hockey League history to score 20+ goals in each of his first 13 seasons.

"Me and Tom had a chat today and said, 'Let's set up Backy, '" Ovechkin said.

"He's always been a guy that's been full committed at both ends of the ice", Holtby said about Wilson. I can't just lay down and play dead. "I think he's figuring out to create offense at the same time as being very responsible defensively".

The second goal was all on Forsberg. It was a soft goal to give up for Forsberg, pressed into duty because top goaltender Corey Crawford is on injured reserve with an undisclosed "lower-body" injury.

Just 29 seconds later, Forsberg's night was done when Alex Ovechkin cleaned up a rush chance rebound from Wilson. That marked his NHL-best 21st goal. Chicagos goals came from top center Jonathan Toews and wing Lance Bouma.

Wilson had two goals and two assists for his first four-point game, and Ovechkin had a goal and three assists, and the duo made good on their plan to get Backstrom a goal. But even when he wasn't scoring, Backstrom remained poised. "So hopefully we can just build off this". "Still, we have a lot of things to improve, but right now we're all right".
