Ohio State's 5-point play leaves UM's Beilein astonished

Down 13 at halftime, Ohio State outscored MI 41-19 in the second half.

Moritz Wagner had 14 points and nine rebounds, and Muhammad-Ali Abdur-Rahkman and Zavier Simpson each scored 11 for MI (7-3, 1-1), which shot 5-for-29 in the woeful second half and was outscored 15-2 over the final four and a half minutes.

The Buckeyes trailed by as many as 19 points in the first half and didn't lead until 7 ½ minutes had ticked off in the second, when Bates-Diop hit a pair of foul shots to make it 47-46.

MI coach talks about his team's poor second half in Monday's 71-62 loss.

"I have not (seen a five-point play) until yesterday", Beilein said during his weekly radio show Tuesday night. The Wolverines missed 10 of their final 11 shots and the Buckeyes scored 11 straight points over the final four minutes to take control, 67-60, with 31 seconds remaining. "We just made little adjustments, played a little harder".

"For us to be able to defend them like we did in the second half was terrific", Ohio State coach Chris Holtmann said. "But nobody anticipated the switch, so everybody was in full help".

"So, when the ball was in the air, Jaaron slightly put his arm around the belly of the 270-pound guy and it had nothing to do with the play".

According to Beilein, the explanation he was given is that the official who made the call didn't know Bates-Diop had released a shot when he blew the whistle on Simmons.

"We came out with a lack of focus and wasn't locked in", Simpson said. "They make them both, five points and all of a sudden (20-point lead) goes to 13 (at halftime) just like that. They made plays, and played with energy and toughness and we didn't".

But it wasn't the only one.

"As good as we were in the first 18 minutes of the first half, we were just equally as bad in the second half", MI coach John Beilein said. "When things got a little tough, we really had trouble stepping up". "Coach (Chris Holtmann) was telling us all week that we've either got to get exhausted of losing or we're just going to get lessons taught to us over and over again". "I'm sure us getting down 20 had something to do with it". "That's the way it is".
