2,402 Americans were killed in the surprise attack by the Japanese that targeted the Pacific Fleet of the U.S. Navy. People are remembering the sacrifice of the servicemen that day.

First lady Melania Trump on Thursday tweeted the incorrect date of the Japanese bombing of the USA naval base in Hawaii, which was the catalyst for the involvement of the United States in World War II.

Meyer was a fireman first class on December 7, 1941 when a torpedo hit the port side of the Utah.

He says he thinks about his shipmates and how they were killed. The 18-year-old fireman first class later served in the battles at Attu, Kiska, Iwo Jima and Okinawa. "It reminds me that we're lucky we got off and we've made a good country for them", Meyer said. Alongside a photo of the first lady and President Donald Trump from their visit to the memorial in Hawaii earlier this year, she wrote: "Today we honor Pearl Harbor Heroes".

Author Steve Twomey was scheduled to deliver the ceremony's keynote address. In attendance will be Pearl Harbor survivors, World War II veterans, family members and dignitaries, according to a press release. Almost half were on the USS Arizona battleship, which exploded and sank after being bombed.
