Willie Taggart Called Liar by Troy Dye, Ripped by Oregon Players

Willie Taggart only spent one season at OR, but an opportunity to coach Florida State brought the young head coach back to his roots.

Fuller, who played at Florida State from 1992-94 and then went on to have a 10-year National Football League career, joined 1010XL Radio in Jacksonville on Tuesday night to talk about how it ended for Fisher in Tallahassee, as well as giving his thoughts on Taggart as the new coach at FSU.

The 41-year-old Taggart just completed his first season as head coach at OR, where he went 7 and 5.

Willie Taggart started his Florida State career with the Tomahawk Chop as he arrived to cheerleaders and the Seminoles marching band.

Aside from not-so-subtly hinting (again) that he didn't share a vision with FSU administration, Fisher said the decision to accept the A&M head-coaching gig was "a no-brainer".

"I think he is going to do great and I think it's a great opportunity to be the first African-American coach to be hired at Florida State".

Following Fisher's abrupt departure, it took less than a week for Florida State to find its man. Florida State athletic director Stan Wilcox said Wednesday that he knew right away that Taggart was the one they wanted for the job. "We want to bring people together to win championships", Taggart said.

Taggart's mom said the family made the trip to Tallahassee to experience the special moment. "But like I told him, I'm sorry that I did let him down and like I told everyone there, I'm sorry, I apologize". "But we're also a national brand and Florida State University don't have to settle for anything and we can go after the best of them nationwide, but we're going to take care of things at home".

"When (Willie) told me, 'This is my dream job, ' that sealed it for me", Wilcox said of Taggart, a Bradenton, Fla., native who grew up as a Seminoles fan. He will coach the Seminoles in the December 27 Independence Bowl against Southern Mississippi.

When Taggart was hired by OR, he said he had three basic tenets: "Make no excuses, blame no one, do something", tenants he reiterated during his introductory media conference.

The Ducks were 7-5 in Taggart's lone season in Eugene. Co-offensive coordinator and offensive line coach Mario Cristobal will be the interim head coach when OR faces Boise State in the Las Vegas Bowl on December 16. The Bulls doubled their win total in each of Taggart's first three years before their stellar 2016 season in which USF won 11 games (Taggart left before the bowl game) and finished ranked in the top 25 for the first time in program history. The Seminoles have appeared in 36 consecutive bowl games.
