Colour company Pantone has chosen a vibrant purple shade, named Ultra Violet, as its colour of the year for 2018.
Pantone announces a new colour of the year every December, based on trend-forecasting research from the Pantone Color Institute. UltraViolet is an enigmatic purple shade that evokes the inventive spirit and imaginative thinking.
While 2018 has yet to officially start, we already know something about the year ahead-it's going to be filled with purple.
No word of politics in Pantone's 2018 selection, however. "As a color that can take you in so many directions, Ultra Violet makes a statement in any space, whether it's one of tradition and elegance or unexpected boldness". Rose Quartz and Serenity of 2016 was about increased awareness over gender issues.
"As individuals around the world become more fascinated with color and realize its ability to convey deep messages and meanings", said Laurie Pressman, Vice President of the Pantone Color Institute. Pantone also noted the color's ties to mindfulness, spirituality and creative living. Musical icons Prince, David Bowie, and Jimi Hendrix brought shades of Ultra Violet to the forefront of western pop culture as personal expressions of individuality.
Unlike other "Colors of the Year" put out by paint companies, Pantone's color forecasts are used across many industries including fashion, consumer products, graphic and packaging.
When it comes to interior design and home decorating, Pantone's colour of the year plays a hugely influential role in dictating trends for the year to come. "For a regal, energizing look, pair it with lighter, contrasting blues and terra cotta oranges".
