MSU's secrecy in Larry Nassar sex abuse scandal threatens its mission

A total of 125 women came forward to the MSU Police Department to report crimnal behavior, and more than that are now involved in civil suits against Nassar, the university, USA Gymnastics and the Eaton County gymnastics facility Twistars.

It was an emotional MSU Board of Trustees meeting as the angry victims of Larry Nassar did not seem impressed by an apology from President Lou Anna Simon or her creation of a ten-million dollar fund for counseling for victims. "Your lawyers say that Nassar fooled everyone at MSU".

Nassar was sentenced to 60 years in federal prison on child pornography charges earlier this month. Nassar treated young women and girls from both organizations.

"I am truly sorry for the abuse you suffered, the pain it caused and the pain it continues to cause today", Simon said. He's the first high-ranking MI official to call for Simon's resignation amid the fallout of the Nassar case and has joined calls for an independent probe after MSU's internal investigators cleared university officials of any wrongdoing in how they handled the Nassar case.

She said she's felt insulted by comments made by the university's lawyers, and said she's frustrated so many of those who worked closely with Nassar still hold their polsitions. Others demanded that the university make a public report about what it has found while reviewing how it responded to allegations against Nassar.

Michigan State is failing utterly the tests of transparency and accountability.

Trustee Mitch Lyons added, "We're going to do what's right for the victims ahead of the university", and insists a case like Larry Nassar will never happen again.

Lorincz told the trustees that they weren't doing enough.

Several of the trustees at Friday's meeting adamantly denied that the university was attempting to cover up any wrongdoing.

According to emails obtained by the Lansing State Journal and the Washington Post, Strampel was informed during the 2014 Title IX investigation into Nassar's conduct at MSU, where Nassar was eventually cleared.

Simon closed the meeting by telling Lorincz that she "may just take you up on your offer".
