One body was found and two people are still missing after a front portion of a building collapsed in Zaveri Bazaar in Mumbai on Friday.

Officials of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation Disaster Management Cell said the bodies of Firoz Shaikh (23), Safar-ul-haq (26) and Rocky Shaikh (22) were recovered on Friday evening. The incident happened at around 2:30 PM when a slab of an under-construction MHADA building collapsed while some repair-work was going on.

"The residents were evacuated a long time ago from the structure, after which Mhada appointed a contractor to carry on the fix works", said Jivak Gadgemal, assistant municipal commissioner of "C" ward. Eleven workers were undertaking fix work, which was being carried out using Rs. 2 lakh from the fund of Deepak Sawant, Member of Legislative Council and state Health Minister. There were 41 tenants, of whom four were residents and 37 were commercial. The three were rushed to JJ Hospital, where they were declared brought dead.

Khan, a scrap dealer, along with his son Mohammed, had gone to the Chhipi Chawl building to collect old iron rods minutes before the slab collapsed. A passage on the fourth floor of the building at Shamseth Street had collapsed, bringing down the first, second and third-floor passages too. However, they vacated it this year in September.

"MHADA has formed an inquiry committee which will be headed by deputy chief engineer and will investigate the matter following by submitting the report", said Sumit Bhange, MBRB.

Fire Brigade personnel found it hard to carry out a rescue operation due to the narrow lanes and congestion.
