"It was standing in front of me and I tried to turn left real quick and get back in the house, and caught an uppercut from a brown, or a black, bear".

Meunier joked about the attack and said he felt lucky to be alive. Meunier told police he saw three bears total that stood over five feet tall.

The 41-year-old told police he was attacked by a bear when it swiped at him right after the dog ran back inside.

Meunier had to be taken to the hospital for treatment after he suffered several cuts across his head and stomach.

Meunier says the bear's claws almost ripped open his face. "It could've been a totally different story".

It seems like this neighborhood has had a bear presence for some time as other residents have spotted bears digging through the trash.

The bear was not a stranger to him.

According to WINK News in Florida, the attack is the first documented bear attack in the state of Florida since 1970.

Carol Lyn Parrish, a spokeswoman for the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission confirmed the agency receiving 13 calls regarding human-bear interactions in the area around the Amberton Townhomes complex since October. The man said it was like he was literally in a boxing match with a bear.
