NBC feared the station's cash cow show would lose viewership and ratings but, instead, became more profitable in the post-Lauer months with Kotb as the temporary co-host. The longtime Today show weatherman took to Twitter on Tuesday to shut down a commenter who was displeased with Hoda Kotb's new role on the morning show.
A "Today" rep told Page Six that NBC doesn't comment on talent contracts. The woman said she kept quiet about the accusation as she was afraid for her job. Lauer's astronomical salary also could reflect the 25 years he was on the show, the insider added. "But the figures underline the huge wage disparity at NBC News", an NBC source said.
The glaring discrepancy between Lauer and Kotb's salaries raises questions about what kind of people are valued at NBC.
Guthrie joined NBC News as a correspondent in 2007 and has been the co-anchor of Today since 2012. However, she too rakes in lesser than Lauer, her estimated salary being $15 to $20 million for hosting "Megyn Kelly Today". And while Kotb, 53, will be doing double duty, co-anchoring while also continuing to co-host her 10 a.m. show with Kathie Lee Gifford, according to the Hollywood Reporter, her compensation won't be almost as much as Lauer's was. "This has to be the most popular decision NBC News has ever made", Guthrie said.
Hoda Kotb may have just landed Matt Lauer's old job, but she didn't land his hefty paycheck. "I misunderstood. Have a great day". Hoda has been tapped to join Savannah Guthrie for two hours a day, starting at 7 A.M. She will later clink wine glasses with Kathie Lee Gifford in the fourth hour of "Today".
But, I can hear some of you say, he was with the show forever.
NBC management took it day by day and chose to keep Kotb in the chair in December.
Even after she steps into shoes of Lauer, co-hosting the show from 7 a.m.to 9 a.m., she will continue to host her old show with Gifford. "He adores Hoda and he knows how good she is and so I know that to be true". Guthrie said she helped teach Kotb how to get a tighter swaddle on the baby.
