Versace TV Murder Series Treats Family With Kindness, Producer Says

After producer Ryan Murphy defended the series on Tuesday, insisting that "it is not a work of fiction", the Versace family put out a second, longer statement on Wednesday condemning both the series and the "bogus" book Vulgar Favors.

"Since Versace did not authorise the book on which it is partly based nor has it taken part in the writing of the screenplay, this TV series should only be considered as a work of fiction".

In July, 1997, Gianni Versace was shot dead on the front steps of his palatial home on Miami's glamorous South Beach.

"Like the original American Crime Story series The People Vs OJ Simpson which was based on Jeffrey Toobin's non-fiction bestseller The Run of His Life, FX's follow-up The Assassination Of Gianni Versace is based on Maureen Orth's heavily researched and authenticated non-fiction bestseller Vulgar Favors, which examined the true-life crime spree of Andrew Cunanan", it said.

"It saddens (us) to see that among all possible portraits of (Gianni's) life and story, the producers chose to present the false and distorted version created by Maureen Orth", it added.

"I made that phone call to her because when Ryan (Murphy) called me, I said to him, 'I have all the reasons to say yes to this, an fantastic project, ' and I heard that he was going to do it with respect for the family - that was important for me", she explains to news show Extra.

This isn't the first time the family has expressed doubts about the American Crime Story, but it is the first time it has released an official statement.

Penelope Cruz would not have taken on her new role as Donatella Versace without the fashion mogul's consent.

She was particularly concerned about how her children Allegra and Daniel will be depicted, according to.

The statement goes on to specifically call out instances in the book that they say are false. "I didn't want it to be sleazy and exploitive".

"I had a lot of months of preparation.", she admits. From that place of devastation, she had to keep this company going in his honor.

In November Donatella confirmed that she'd spoken with Cruz, but said she has no intention to watch the show. She's an incredibly respected journalist. Ricky Martin stars as Versace's partner, Antonio D'Amico.

'There has been so much written and said about the murder, and thousands of suppositions, but not a trace of reality, ' D'Amico told the. "I felt, my God, I talked to over 400 people". A few feet away, tourists are soaking napkins in his puddled blood, then sealing them in plastic bags, artifacts of the True Cross for the 20th century's most heartfelt religion, the cult of celebrity. The Simpson story is a sprawling saga that encompasses far more than its central crime; Assassination never manages to turn Versace's murder into the same kind of miniseries-worthy epic. It will start broadcasting on January 17.
