Local reaction to GOP courting Tressel for Senate race

Republican Ohio Treasurer Josh Mandel withdrew from the Senate race last week because of his wife's health. And for that reason I've agreed to answer the call to service and enter the race for United States Senate.

Renacci made his decision after a Wednesday morning meeting at the White House. Renacci's campaign declined to comment.

"My goal is to be the governor of the state of Ohio", Renacci said Monday on the "Wills and Snyder Show" on WTAM radio in Cleveland.

The congressman is close to Trump and state GOP Chairwoman Jane Timken, which Republicans expect will give him an advantage in the May 8 primary.

Investment banker Mike Gibbons is already running and has been securing endorsements from some local party leaders.

If Trump did commit to supporting Renacci in the Senate race, the president presumably could help the multi-millionaire businessman raise money for what would be a tough race to unseat Brown.

Mike Biundo, a consultant for Gibbons, said Gibbons was committed to the race and had done more to support Trump than any other potential candidate. "The last thing the voters in OH want is another opportunistic career politician who's only looking to jump from one office to the next - and Jim Renacci can't even decide what office he wants to jump to".

The position is now held by Democrat Sherrod Brown, who is seeking re-election.

The Cincinnati Enquirer reported, citing unnamed Republicans with knowledge of the decision, that Renacci chose to run for Senate after White House political staff urged him to run against incumbent Sen. In the past two days he has circulated the names of OH county GOP chairs and local Renacci leaders who are now backing him in the Senate contest.

But some Republicans in the state expressed skepticism of Vance's ability to introduce himself to voters in the state after being away for a while.

Vance has also been critical of Trump, which could be problematic in a GOP primary. Sherrod Brown (D., Ohio) in the general election.

"No one has done more to support President Trump in OH than Mike Gibbons has, including serving as a campaign finance chair for the President and no one will do more than Mike to advance conservative policies and the Trump agenda in the Senate", said Mr. Gibbons' general consultant, Mike Biundo.

Senate Majority PAC, the Democratic super PAC, released a statement Thursday previewing some of the attacks Renacci is likely to encounter.
