Passenger Yuksel Gordu told Turkey's official Anadolu news agency that words weren't enough to describe their fear.

Dramatic images show the aircraft dangling precariously, as it got stuck in the mud on the edge of a cliff - reportedly causing panic on board.

All 162 passengers and crew on board were evacuated and are safe, Trabzon Governor Yücel Yavuz said.

Authorities said they did not know what caused the incident involving the Pegasus Airlines Boeing 737-800, which was traveling from Ankara to Trabzon, the AP reported.

As you can see in the photos, the damage is pretty extensive to the plane - but, miraculously, there were no fatalities and all passengers were successfully and safely evacuated. "The front of the plane crashed and the back was in the air".

Mr Yavuz said the airport was closed for several hours while investigations took place.

The airport was temporarily shut before reopening on Sunday morning.
