"We are now in the midst of a very active flu season with much of the nation experiencing widespread and intense activity", CDC Director Brenda Fitzgerald told reporters during a briefing.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has rescheduled a teaching session on the public health response to a nuclear blast that was to take place Tuesday.

On January 2, President Trump sought to antagonize North Korean leader Kim Jung Un that the US nuclear arsenal was more powerful than the hermit kingdom's, in a tit for tat after Mr. Kim said he had his country's nuclear button ready.

The majority of cases continue to be the H3N2 subtype of Influenza A, a particularly brutal strain that tends to cause more severe illness, particularly among the elderly and children. There have been 1,850 reported hospitalizations, 68 percent of which were seniors.

It's not yet known how effective the vaccine is for this season.
