Hours later, Copperfield had become the subject of a story from The Wrap alleging that the magician had drugged and sexually assaulted model Brittney Lewis in 1988, when she was 17.
Lewis told The Wrap that she met the magician in September 1988 in Atami, Japan, for the "Look of the Year" modelling contest, where Copperfield, then 32, was working as a judge for the competition.
The 61-year-old took to Twitter Wednesday and said while that he's behind the tide emerging to wipe out sexual harassment and abuse, people should not immediately accept claims made as definitive proof.
David Copperfield has released a statement giving his own take on the #MeToo movement, warning of the dangers of false accusations - at the same time that a woman has accused him of drugging and raping her as a teenager.
"Three years and hundreds of stories reported on a false claim investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, where the end result was that the accuser was caught by law enforcement making the same false claim about another man", he said.
Without naming his accusers, Copperfield's statement notes, "We all want people who feel they've been victims of sexual misconduct to be empowered, and as a rule we should listen, so more will feel comfortable coming forward".
Copperfield mentions another incident where he was accused of sexual assault and investigated for two years by a woman who later pleaded guilty to falsely accusing a different man of sexual assault.
After Carroll launched her complaint, FBI investigated her case for two years and even raided Copperfield's Las Vegas warehouse before closing it in January 2010 for unknown reasons. "Always listen, and consider everything carefully, but please for everyone's sake don't rush to judgment". Lewis said she blacked out, but remembers Copperfield removing her clothing and sexually assaulting her in a hotel room.
Burton said: "She said it was so exciting and they treated her so nice".
"I asked, 'What are you doing?' and he said, 'Oh, I'm just sharing, '" she claims he replied.
Afterwards, he allegedly poured something in her drink at a bar and later performed sex acts on her in a hotel room. "He was kissing my face and then I remember him starting to go down on my body with his face". She also stresses that she is not seeking money from the magician or others.
Lewis told the outlet that she was not 100 percent sure on which city it was, but believed it to be San Diego. She claims he specifically told her, "I didn't enter you".
A therapist later told her that was a contract for her silence. But she said she made it clear to him that nothing romantic would be going on when he allegedly tried to hold his hand, telling him they were "just friends".
Copperfield did not respond to The Wrap's requests for comments on Tuesday.
In an interview with E!, Gosselin said that Copperfield often shows him her tricks, but she's not easy on him.
"He wanted to me know that nothing happened because I was underage..."
