Airbus stops accepting PW1100G engines for A320neo aircraft

Airbus said 113 of the jets at 18 airlines use the Pratt geared turbofan engine, but not all are affected.

The move will force airlines operating the A320neo with affected engines to ground some of their planes, it added.

The A320neo specific PW1100G has been hounded with technical problems and reliability issues, while its variants were less affected. But Airbus has still parked around 30 otherwise completed aircraft at its manufacturing sites in Toulouse and Hamburg awaiting engines. It is in the midst of increasing output and last week said it may speed up further.

According to the airline, the recommendations by Pratt & Whitney as well as EASA are with respect to a certain sub- population of engines, with a particular engine configuration.

A statement from IndiGo on Saturday said the precautionary measure of grounding the three aircraft "resulted in cancellations of some of our flights". Both A320neos and A321neos are affected.

Since entering service in January 2016, Pratt says these engines have more than 500,000 hours of passenger service, and demonstrated its promised ability to reduce fuel burn by 16 percent to reduce nitrogen oxide emissions by 50 percent to the regulatory standard, and to lower the noise footprint by 75 percent.

The performance problem with the engine performance is apparently new, but Pratt & Whitney has had ongoing issues with supply of new engines, leading to delivery delays and reduced revenue forecasts in recent years.
