Moon tried to keep both Pyongyang and Washington happy Saturday when he received the invitation, delivered by Kim Yo Jong, the North Korean leader's younger sister and close aide, during a meeting at the presidential Blue House in Seoul. The two Koreas had combined teams and played simply as "Korea", wearing uniforms emblazoned with blue-and-white flags showing an undivided peninsula. Moon would irritate Trump if he accepts the invitation, while declining would make the US and South Korea appear "unreasonably bellicose", he said. He also called for the need of a quick resumption of dialogue between North Korea and the United States.
Although the male agent later died, the female survived and was extradited to South Korea for further questioning. North Korea has said it will never give up its nuclear deterrent and critics in the South see its participation in the Games as a reward for bad behavior.
North Korea's delegation sent to the Winter Olympics held "frank and candid" talks with South Korean President Moon Jae-in, the North Korean news agency said on Sunday, but it made no mention of the North's invitation to Moon to Pyongyang for a summit.
It was the US that appeared to be the one left in the cold, especially after the sister of the North Korean dictator extended an invitation from her brother for Moon to visit the North.
They shared the VIP box with world leaders at the opening ceremony and joined Moon in cheering for the first-ever inter-Korean Olympic team as it debuted in the women's ice hockey tournament.
As Olympic games attendee and South Korean citizen Kyu-hoon told Cho, "Unification is what I was taught to long for".
After their meeting with Moon, the North Korean delegates got on a bullet train to Gangneung, a coastal city that hosts the skating, hockey and curling events during the Olympics. Pence told Moon the global community must not repeat the mistakes of the past by giving North Korea concessions in exchange for talking.
"She (Kim Yo Jong) is not charming, she is a dictator's sister", Laila said."She is not looking after North Korean people".
Still, North Korea has shown no signs it's willing to discuss denuclearization. Communications director Jarrod Agen tweeted a laudatory review of Pence's evening: "VP stands and cheers for USA athletes. VP does not applaud N. Korea or exchange pleasantries w/ the most oppressive regime on earth", he wrote.
"The fate of our nation must be determined by our own selves - we must not allow the repeat of unfortunate past history where our fate was determined with no regard to our opinions", Moon said in a speech to South Korean lawmakers in November.
It's hard to find an exact historical comparison to Moon's situation outside of Korea.
Many analysts are skeptical about Kim Jong Un's motivations for this sudden outreach, especially as he continues to assert his desire to press ahead with his nuclear weapons program to fend off the "hostile" United States.
"In the midst of all this, he ran a military parade that highlighted his ballistic missiles".
And as the South appeared to look favorably on warming ties on the Korean Peninsula, Pence insisted Saturday "there is no daylight" among the United States and allies South Korea and Japan in intensifying pressure on the North over its nuclear and missile programs.
