Canada captures gold in mixed doubles curling


The Olympic gold is the sixth all-time for Canada.

Canada claimed the first Winter Olympics curling mixed doubles title after beating Switzerland 10-3 Tuesday in Pyeongchang, South Korea.

Canada were crowned the first Olympics mixed doubles curling champions on Tuesday, claiming gold with a 10-3 blowout win over world champions Switzerland. It registered two points to swing the scoreboard back in its favor and picked up a steal in the eighth frame to secure the win and a spot in the gold medal game.

"If someone is going to try curling, this mixed doubles is where it's at", said Morris, a firefighter known to his fans back home as "Johnny Mo".

The controversy over a malfunction in the equipment used to calculate the distances of pre-game last stone draws died down quickly because the cumulative scores from the process were not needed to determine placings in the standings at the end of the round robin. Each team delivers five stones, but has six rocks in play because a stone from each team is pre-positioned in front of the rings and in the house.

"We've played a lot of games in a lot of pressure situations", Lawes said.

Their priority was winning the team trials in December.

When the International Olympic Committee announced it would be a 2018 Olympic sport, former Canadian and world men's champion Jeff Stoughton was hired by Curling Canada to oversee a mixed doubles program in hurry-up mode. Morris took home his second Olympic gold after winning with Kevin Martin's team in the 2010 Olympic games in Vancouver. Morris said he'd hung his tail between his legs for a couple of days, then perked up for a second shot at the Games as Lawes' partner. The proceedings start with the bronze medal match Monday evening in America, 6 p.m. ET, between Norway and Olympic Athletes of Russian Federation. Lawes made one of her many flawless shots in the final to put four points on the board.

"Kaitlyn made some dandy shots that really put the heat on them and that four in the third end was huge", Morris said. Canada scored another deuce in the fourth to lead 4-2 and stole one in the fifth.

The pivotal moment of the match came in the third as a failed takeout from Perret opened the door for Lawes to score four. Perret had a hard hit to score. I don't know why just yet.

"I'm disappointed by my performance", Switzerland's Martin Rios said. We got off to a great start.

In the debut medal event for mixed doubles at the Olympics, Canada was joined by the U.S., Norway, Finland, China, OAR, host Korea and Switzerland.
