Rahul sets up steering committee for plenary session

Rahul Gandhi on Friday set in motion the process of picking a Steering Committee, which replaces the Congress Working Committee (CWC), ahead of the upcoming plenary session.

The Steering Committee will meet on Saturday to decide the schedule for the plenary session.

Apart from Mr. Gandhi, who presided over the first meeting of the Steering Committee, other leaders who were present included Congress Parliamentary Party chief Sonia Gandhi, and former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.

The meeting also assumes significance since Rahul will use the occasion to unveil his vision for the party and his plans on how to revive it and make it battle ready for the coming round of elections, especially the Lok Sabha polls scheduled to be held in 2019.

Rahul is to soon release the names of members of the new Committee which is likely to include his mother Sonia Gandhi too. During the session, the committee members will ratify the election of Gandhi as the Congress president on December 11. The comment from AICC led to further speculation if Rahul will call for elections to CWC, an idea that he has shared with party leaders in the past years. The Congress has, in the recent past, faced many questions, especially from rival BJP, on the lack of internal democracy in the party.

"The steering committee will function in place of the Working Committee of the party", AICC general secretary Janardhan Dwivedi said.

"The Prime Minister must also tell the nation how a fraud of this magnitude escaped the eyes of all the auditors and investigators conducting "statutory audit", "internal audit", "concurrent audit" and even the RBI's own audit?" the statement said.

The decision was taken by the steering committee of the party where Rahul clarified that his new team would comprise both of young and experienced leaders.
