Budget session of Parliament: Stalemate on Day 6, protests continue

The House was first adjourned till 2 pm and later for the day.

Last week, the TDP withdrew its two Central Ministers P Ashok Gajapathi Raju (Civil Aviation) and YS Chowdary (Minister of State for Science and Technology) from the government, protesting the refusal of the Centre to oblige its demands for grant of special category status to Andhra Pradesh along with some other benefits.

There was no let-up in protests as the House met again at noon but the Speaker went ahead with the proceedings, including the introduction of two Bills by Minister of State for Finance Shiv Pratap Shukla, amid the din.

With members continuing their protest, the Chair was forced to adjourn the House till 2pm.

YSR Congress leader Vaivi Subbareddy introduced an adjournment motion in the Lok Sabha to discuss the Andhra Pradesh row, and Jan Adhikar Party leader Pappu Yadav introduced the motion in the Lower House to discuss the alleged leak of a question paper for an exam the Staff Selection Commission conducted in February.

However, Shukla said these provisions can be debated during the discussion on the Bill, and introduced it. Soon after this, the House was adjourned.

Insisting on his demand for special category status to Andhra Pradesh, Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu on Monday urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to honour the promises made by the centre at the time of bifurcation of the state.

"Hence we are strongly asking him (to honour the promises made in the Reorganisation Act as well as those made in Rajya Sabha by the then Prime Minister Manmohan Singh), Naidu said". "Proper advance notice should be given", Naidu said.

Goel was asked to inform Ahluwalia that he can make a statement on Tuesday.

Chairman M Venkaiah Naidu adjourned the House till 2 PM amidst noisy scenes. Trinamool Congress (TMC) member Sukhendu Sekhar Roy stood up seeking the Chair's permission to raise a point of order.

The Telugu Desam Party on Sunday nominated sitting MP CM Ramesh and noted lawyer Kanakamedala Ravindra Kumar for the two Rajya Sabha seats it is contesting in Andhra Pradesh. Meanwhile, TDP MPs staged a protest in front of the Mahatma Gandhi statue on Parliament premises holding placards demanding justice to the State.
