Broncos and Keenum agree on two years

The free-agent quarterback will sign with the Broncos when the National Football League year begins Wednesday, ESPN's Adam Schefter reported early Tuesday. The Vikings went 11-3 in his regular-season starts in place of an injured Sam Bradford.

Denver is in the market for a quarterback after going through last season with Trevor Siemian, Brock Osweiler and Paxton Lynch.

Keenum turned in the best season of his career in 2017 when he led the Minnesota Vikings to an 11-3 record, completed 67.6 percent of his passes and threw for 3,547 yards, 22 touchdowns and just 7 interceptions.

Klis also reported that while the Broncos did have at least one negotiation with Cousins, the team did not make a "serious run" at the former Redskins quarterback and they focused their efforts on Keenum.

The Vikings are a team that's been looking for a franchise quarterback since Fran Tarkenton retired. Neither, too, can Keenum's connection to Gary Kubiak, an advisor for the Broncos.

The Broncos balked at Cousins' bargaining starting point Monday. Sitting at No. 5, he is very much in play for one of the five big-time talents (Jackson, Darnold, Rosen, Mayfield, Allen) and could provide his team the comfort of a short-term quality starter alongside the promise of a long-term rookie option. Misses don't bother me. "That is what we are working on".

According to ESPN, Broncos GM John Elway recently said that the team can get back to the playoffs with a QB signing such as Keenum.

The Broncos haven't reached the playoffs in the past two seasons and in Keenum, they get a postseason-tested quarterback. This figure and the term of the contract - unlike with Cousins - should not preclude the Broncos from drafting a quarterback fifth overall if they choose to go in that direction. We didn't play very well there a year ago, and that's not all on the players. There were some things that we should have done differently that we didn't do.
