'Grey's Anatomy's' Sarah Drew to Star in CBS' 'Cagney and Lacey'

The police crime drama, which ran from 1982 to 1988, revolved around the lives of Mary Beth Lacey and Chris Cagney - two female police officers in New York City.

There was strong reaction from Grey's Anatomy fans last week when Deadline broke the news that longtime cast members Drew and Jessica Capshaw would not return next season in a decision the producers explained with the show's creative direction. Sharon Gless and Tyne Daly, respectively, starred as the title characters in CBS' 1981-88 original series and three 1990s TV-movies, which were set in NY. She is the partner and protégé of Hurd's Lacey, the more experienced half of the duo and an accomplished athlete.

Michelle Hurd of "Blindspot" will play the "polished" Los Angeles police detective Lacey, a former high school track champion.

Bridget Carpenter penned the script for CBS' Cagney and Lacey and executive produces alongside Rosemary Rodriguez, who will direct the pilot from CBS Television Studios and MGM Television.

"Well, it's been quite a week", Drew tweeted alongside an article about her casting.

The actress has been tapped to star as Cagney in CBS' Cagney and Lacey reboot.

Later that day, the 37-year-old actress, who plays Dr. April Kepner on Grey's, revealed she already started filming the new show: "Day 1 on #cagneyandlacey done!"

The women-centric show is only one of the three revivals set to air on CBS for the 2018-19 season. For now, I'd like to say: "I love you April and her story isn't over yet..."
