New health rankings show Rankin on top, Holmes on bottom


The annual survey of health rankings of almost every county in the nation was conducted as a collaboration between the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and the University of Wisconsin Population Health Institute.

In the 2018 County Health Rankings, Broome County ranks 8 out of 62 counties in New York State for Physical Environment, which includes Air and Water Quality and Housing and Transit.

Local Tennessee counties fared much better than Southwest Virginia.

Pennsylvania's healthiest and least healthy counties are in our area, according to new rankings. Nassau County was ranked 23nd, Duval County was ranked No. 42 and Baker County was ranked 48th. A group of community leaders and health care representatives this week called for an increased response to address the problem, prompted by the recent discovery of an HIV and syphilis cluster in Milwaukee that has affected at least 125 people.

"We need to do more to address the true underlying drivers of health, if we want to see improvements and decrease health care costs." said Dr. Elizabeth Tilson, the state health director and chief medical officer.

According to the rankings, about 47 percentage of driving deaths in Le Sueur County involved alcohol, compared to about 30 percent in Minnesota overall and 13 percent for the nation's top performers. In 2017, the county was ranked fifth for health outcomes and second for health factors. "They confirm overall health is driven by various social and economic factors that can not be ignored any longer", Ordinans added.

Blue Earth County's STD rates are an outlier in the region, but numerous other poor health metrics are shared by neighbors. In Lancaster, the average is 7 percent, but broken out by race it's 6 percent of white babies, 10 percent of Hispanic babies and 11 percent of black babies.

The report shows health disparities among the counties in North Texas and across the state.

These rankings are a snapshot of the health of counties across the country and they emphasize that health is not a singular effort but a combined work in progress across all community partners.

Your zip code can be a good indicator of your health. Olmsted County came in at #14, Freeborn County is #34, and Mower County is ranked the 56th healthiest county in Minnesota.

Officials with the Columbia/Boone County Public Health and Human Services Department plans to consider the data in its current work towards the county's next five-year community health improvement plan.
