Police seized hundreds of thousands of dollars' worth of products which were cheap imitations of popular brands such as Urban Decay and Kylie Cosmetics. Detective Rick Ishitani said the price tells you if it's counterfeit or not.

LAPD's Anti-Piracy Unit began an investigation into the sale of the allegedly counterfeit cosmetics after customers called the actual cosmetic companies complaining of bumps and rashes from the products they had purchased in Santee Alley.

"If you're getting something that's 50 percent off, 75 percent off, it tells you that it's bad", Ishitani told CNN. The bacteria included traces of animal feces and urine.

The counterfeit products were uncovered in a raid of 21 stores in the city's Fashion District, notes Los Angeles television station KABC. He explained this kind of contamination simply wouldn't happen with legitimate products because they're manufactured in proper facilities that adhere to safety standards.

Authorities arrested six people, who are expected to be charged with trademark violations of major brands. Fifteen other people caught in the raid were served with cease and desist orders.
