Trolleys abandoned at the Caneland Woolworths registers. Many have left full trolleys behind.
"Shoppers have been told to leave groceries in baskets in the aisle", one customer from Brisbane wrote on Twitter.
"It was really frustrating".
A security guard was also stationed at the closed doors to turn shoppers away.
"The registers are now back online at all our stores", Woolworths tweeted just after 4.52pm.
Registers are now back online, a spokesperson confirmed to The New Daily.
"We can confirm that an IT issue impacted registers at around half our supermarkets nationwide for a short period of time this afternoon", she said. "We apologise for any inconvenience caused".
Shortly after 4pm, the issue began affecting all registers across the country.
Woolworths has apologised after a technical glitch knocked out thousands of registers across the nation for close to an hour, forcing some stores to shut.
The supermarket giant has not yet revealed the cause of the outage.
