He and Mr. Faughnan said researchers believed that the attacker experienced targeted Mr. Souza deliberately, but wouldn't clarify what had contributed them to that decision.

Investigators from multiple agencies interviewed people throughout the night and determined the stabbing was not a random act.

At a press conference on Monday night, police confirmed that Roque, a student from Massapequa, New York, was arrested in his dormitory room Monday afternoon.

Souza graduated previous year from Blind Brook High School in Rye Brook, New York, where he was a star soccer player.

Classes at Binghamton University were canceled on Monday after the second student in two months was killed. They released surveillance photos of the suspect wearing dark trousers and a dark, hooded sweatshirt as they asked for the public's help. "At this time, the police are confident this was not a random act".

Due to the deadly stabbing last night, all classes are canceled Monday, April 16, according to the university's website. Haley Anderson, 22, was a nursing student who was strangled to death at an off-campus residence on March 9, Pix11 News reported.

The first alert said the stabbing occurred in Windham Hall and that the suspect ran away from the area.

"There is a suspect in custody, and we will have further information at an appropriate time", said Broome County District Attorney Steve Cornwell.

In December 2009, Richard T. Antoun, an emeritus professor of anthropology, was fatally stabbed on campus by a graduate student.

The crisis team at the Middle/High School has convened and a plan is in place to provide counseling to students and staff who may be in need.

University police released few details about the ongoing investigation and said it's possible the suspect was still armed.

Counseling is being offered to students and staff.
