Having to pay someone to ensure they comply with the law is what sticks in the craw of many people.
If you need help filing your taxes, the Community Renewal Team (CRT) is offering free help in Hartford.
"Where's My Refund?" can be checked within 24 hours after the IRS has received an e-filed tax return or four weeks after receipt of a mailed paper tax return.
IRS Acting Commissioner David J. Kautter was on Capitol Hill this morning, where he told the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee that "a number of IRS systems are unavailable at the moment".
In a statement that didn't specify the extent or cause of the outage, the Internal Revenue Service said taxpayers should continue filing returns as usual.
The IRS said it believed the problem was a hardware issue and "not other factors".
The IRS has been trying to update its outdated computer systems for several years, and agency leaders have warned about potential malfunctions and said they are guarding closely against external threats. A draft idea would add a layer of security by allowing the taxpayer to request a special filing password to use when filing a return.
It remains to be seen whether there will be some sort of grace period for those who miss the deadline as a result of the IRS's own digital problem.
"Between today and tomorrow hundreds of people", said Sharpe Income Tax CEO William Sharpe.
"Currently, certain IRS systems are experiencing technical difficulties".
As the tax deadline nears and the demand for IRS tax help by phone is higher, the IRS encourages taxpayers to make IRS.gov their first stop when questions arise, as the website offers answers to numerous most common questions, like "Where's My Refund?", how to make tax payments and how to get forms and instructions.
While Direct Pay isn't the only way to make a payment, it's one of the few that doesn't cost extra. Clicking on "Make a payment" on the payments page redirects users to a page titled "unplannedOutagePage".
If you can not pay what you owe before the deadline, you should consider getting help or filing an extension.
"The president as do many Americans registered an extension because of his 17 tax return". This means you don't have to stand in a long line at the post office.
However, there is a big warning to those who are not reporting, and that is that they are simply far more likely to increase the risk of IRS coming knocking. Check the pick-up times on collection boxes before opting not to go to the post office in person.
