With the swift downfall of New York State Attorney General Eric Schneiderman amid accusations that he abused four women, questions are now being asked about how things might change at his old office regarding cooperation with Special Counsel Robert Mueller's Russian Federation probe and more.
The Associated Press reported Tuesday that the Manhattan District Attorney's office is investigating allegations of violence against women by Schneiderman, who resigned just hours after accounts of abuse by four women.
The allegations, which Schneiderman contests but which led him to resign, emerged Monday in an article in The New Yorker, a publication he hailed just last month for reporting on Weinstein and starting a "critical national reckoning" on sexual misconduct by powerful men. The other Republican candidates are state Representative Geoff Diehl (R-Whitman) and former Mitt Romney aide and political consultant Beth Lindstrom.
Schneiderman's pro-abortion record includes a harassment lawsuit against pro-life activists for protesting outside of Choices Women's Medical Center in Jamaica, New York. I support Governor Cuomo's call for a thorough investigation. "I have never engaged in non-consensual sex".
Two women - Michelle Manning Barish and Tanya Selvaratnam - told The New Yorker that Schneiderman slapped, choked and verbally abused them during romantic relationships.
On Monday night, Manning Barish tweeted a link to The New Yorker article and explained why she made a decision to talk. "Something about the structure and incentives of New York's political system means that those who rise ultimately have to do things that compromise their character in one way or another".
Schneiderman's stunning resignation ends what had been a promising prospective career in Democratic politics. "I have not assaulted anyone", Schneiderman said.
Shortly after the report came out, Schneiderman tried to downplay the accusations. They also say he tore down their self-esteem with the attacks, as well as with verbal abuse.
"These women are adamant", Ronan Farrow, who co-wrote the New Yorker story, told "Good Morning America" Tuesday.
"If and when Schneiderman was coordinating with Mueller, it would be likely that he was also bringing Underwood into those conversations", he said.
Schneiderman has long championed women's causes and has been a vocal supporter of the Me Too movement.
"I have a sickness, but I do not have an excuse", he said. Manning Barish said he would physically force the glass to her mouth like she was "a baby who wouldn't eat its food. spilling it down my chin and on my chest".
Barbara Underwood, a veteran of the Attorney General's Office who is now state solicitor general, is functioning as acting attorney general.
The State Senate and State Assembly will choose a successor to fill the remainder of Schneiderman's term. I think these women were especially courageous. Selvaratnam said that that over the course of their yearlong affair, Schneiderman "was a fairytale that became a nightmare".
