Spieth returning to Travelers Championship to defend title

His last top-10 here was a T-8 in 2015, but he also finished T-12 in 2016.

The 30-year-old is keen on contending in the PGA Tour's flagship tournament after missing the cut here twice, including last year where he needed all of 10 shots on the par-4 18th hole after finding the water three times. Fowler won this event, sometimes considered the unofficial fifth major, back in 2015 by edging Sergio Garcia and Kevin Kisner in a playoff.

"I feel a lot of departments are working but my scoring hasn't been as good as I would like it to be. Just get a couple things straightened out, minor tweaks, and it will be a fun week".

Spieth appeared via video at the annual Travelers Championship media day to make the announcement and did so during a conversation with ESPN's Chris Berman, who was at TPC River Highlands. I'm only renting so things might change next year. I think we've done a great job this year of showing that I'm ready to go win a major. "I think it just kind of depends who it is and what's happened". It most of the time does bring, and should bring out, the best in myself.

Thomas has participated three times; Spieth has done so four times.

Other pros that have committed to next month's tournament include Patrick Reed, Rory McIlroy, Justin Thomas, Bubba Watson, Paul Casey, Charley Hoffman, Bryson DeChambeau, Zach Johnson and Jim Furyk.

"Therefore, guys like Rickie, who kind of catches some slack for having not won a major yet, essentially he's won what's harder to win than a major: the Players".

The Players was won in 2011 by KJ Choi, in 2012 by Matt Kuchar, in 2013 by Tiger Woods, in 2014 by Martin Kaymer, in 2015 by Fowler, in 2016 by Jason Day and a year ago by Si-Woo Kim in what was a huge surprise.

Fowler said he plans to putt-out as often as possible to avoid "hitting while the circus" is moving to the next hole.

"Ever since I was a kid, even more so than like Major championships, I always held number one, as many of you know, above those for some reason". It was the first ace in 6,300 shots in the Players Championship and he did it with a yellow ball.

The formula to this course is to drive it accurately, regardless of what club is being hit off the tee, hit as many shots on the green in regulation as possible, get up and down when there isa miss, and attack the Par 5s (Par 5 scoring).

The First Tee, headquartered at the World Golf Village in St. Augustine, is a nonprofit organization which promotes golf to children in partnership with the PGA Tour, the LPGA and other golf organizations. It is a measure of his ability that he somehow found a way to win at Sawgrass on two occasions but those wins came when he was sharp and there remains an element of ring rust about his game.

The 2009 Players champion has been on a nice run of late with three consecutive top-6 finishes. And then Pebble, Mexico, LA, Augusta, Hilton Head. all of them I played plenty well enough to win.
