He also won five Premier League titles and the Champions League.

Lampard, (Patrick) Vieira...now you have Zlatan (Ibrahimovic), you have Wayne, so I hope he enjoys (it).

It is understood Rooney has been offered a contract until the end of the 2020 MLS season.

Rooney joined Manchester United from Everton as an 18-year-old in 2004 and is the Red Devils' record goalscorer with 253 strikes.

"Of course he will bring the attention that MLS needs to attract more people, to steal some people from the other sports that more Americans like".

"There have been rumours about Wayne going overseas, China or America".

Meulensteen said on MUTV's Matchday Review programme when asked whether he can see Rooney playing in the United States: "I can see him going and playing there".

Nothing has been signed yet and uncertainty over Everton boss Sam Allardyce's position means the forward, 32, could stay at Goodison Park.

Widespread reports in the UK have indicated that Rooney is in advanced talks with U.S. outfit DC United over a proposed Sh11.2bn (£12million) switch this summer.

It was all downhill from there, sadly, with Rooney's appearances restricted under Allardyce in a reined-in midfield role and his frustrations made public when he was clearly furious to be substituted in the goalless derby draw with Liverpool at Goodison.

"I really enjoyed him at Everton - he was really young then - I really enjoyed him at Manchester United, he helped me a lot then". Then he's in the Premier League again with Everton, so I think his career in England was flawless.

The former England captain left United last year on a free transfer following 13 trophy-laden years after becoming a peripheral figure under Mourinho.
