The Kiwi took two wickets but it wasn't enough for his Delhi Daredevils as Virat Kohli and AB de Villiers inspired the Royal Challengers to a win. AB de Villiers sprinted and slid to claim the shot with a spectacular catch near the boundary rope, dismissing Delhi's young left-hander for 61 off 34.
Virat Kohli and AB de Villiers produced a batting masterclass as Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) defeated Delhi Daredevils by five wickets in their Indian Premier League (IPL) encounter here on Saturday.
Batsmen on both sides thrived in this basement battle as the hosts looked on course for victory after a strong end to their innings in Delhi, with Abhishek Sharma posting an unbeaten 46 from 19 balls to set a target of 182.
RCB did not begin their innings on an impressive note, with the second over dismissal for Moeen Ali (1 off 3 balls), who was sent to bat at the top of the order. Sandeep Lamichhane became not just the first Nepalese to play here, but also take a wicket.
It was the ideal time for Kohli and de Villiers to unite to take RCB over the line. Pant started from where he had left in the last match to star in a 93-run partnership with skipper Iyer.
Facing an imposing target, RCB lost both their openers inside three overs.
But in the very next over, Yuzvendra Chahal punished Roy (12 off 9) with a flawless googly, claiming the middle stump for the second time in two overs as Delhi stood shocked at 16 runs for two gone.
Tye once again got the breakthrough when Russell top-edged a short-pitched delivery and Karthik also holed out at long off after hitting five fours and three sixes. The RCB have the same number of points but sit a place above Delhi with one less game and a slightly better net run-rate.
At the other end, de Villiers was sedate to begin with, but got into his stride when he welcomed Amit Mishra into the attack with a huge six over long on. While Kohli strokes his way to a 40-ball 70, studded with seven fours and three sixes, de Villiers saw the chase through with his unbeaten 72 off 37 balls, smashing four boundaries and six sixes along the way.
Kohli eventually departed after a 40-ball 70. Meanwhile, Harshal Patel gives away 19 runs from this over.
