The Projected Cut Line At The Players Championship Just Changed

Often considered the unofficial fifth major, large crowds were anticipated due to the powerhouse first round pairings of Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson and Rickie Fowler.

It's reported by respected Irish golf journalist Brian Keogh in today's Irish Independent that the 14-time major victor could touch down in Donegal to tee it up just two weeks before the Open Championship at Carnoustie. "But to be honest, I cared more about having a good routine and hitting a good shot in this golf tournament than the record". Woods was best of the bunch with an even-par 72 but that was hardly what the PGA Tour had in mind when it grouped the best two players of their generation with the popular Fowler at TPC Sawgrass.

Woods acknowledged the course setup had plenty of accessible pins for scoring, but one of the all-time best in that category didn't have the game to pull it off even when he was in favorable position.

"The way I was feeling today, I should have shot something in the 60s", Woods said after the round. The absence of such sentiment in golf circles has owed plenty to cruel analysis; that he was a fluke victor of the US Open in 2012.

Shooting par won't stay in anyone's memory for long, but moments like that one will last. "It was a bad combo". He doesn't have his best stuff obviously.

Maybe if Woods hadn't nearly won the Valspar Championship two months ago, the expectations for him might have been more reasonable. The 14-time major and two-time Players champion then stepped confidently to the island green par-3 17th and stuck a wedge to 10 feet, but could not get the putt to fall.

"I think it is going to be an incredible event and it will surprise everybody". They combined for just five birdies and an eagle.

On Johnson, Bale added: "I really love watching Dustin Johnson play".

"Rory (McIlroy) is committed to helping build the strongest field we can get and I am sure he has taken the time to chat with the guys on the PGA Tour informally". I think his chances of winning a major are maybe better than winning a regular event. He's already had a couple phenomenal weeks.

"I actually really like it", said Mickelson, who is brand ambassador and equity holder in the menswear brand Mizzen and Main. It's anyone's guess whether Woods is putting well on any given day, and that means he can't scare anyone into mistakes.

He hit the green at the hard 237-yard par-3 eighth and lipped out on a 42-foot birdie try.

For his part, 14-time major victor Woods said Mickelson was the name he always looked for on a leaderboard. "With these greens as soft as they are, I didn't take advantage of the opportunities I had to shoot a good number". In last week's Wells Fargo Championship, he barely made a putt over 3 feet. On Friday, the only place he gained strokes was off the tee. "Hopefully give myself some more looks". In this picture, Woods plays a shot from a bunker during practice rounds prior to THE PLAYERS Championship on the Stadium Course at TPC Sawgrass in Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida, May 9, 2018. The cutline kept flipping between 1-under and 2-under all day. In eight tournaments this year, Woods has struggled to put it all together. "They were into it early".

"I'd start off with one", Stricker replied. "Towards the back nine it started getting a little sparse".

Tiger's Troops should brace themselves. "There were times where we kind of got that going".
