"Cruise captioned the image "#Day 1". And of course, they made sure to remind us that they were not flying these planes for fun, as Goose gets killed and it temporarily throws Tom Cruise's "Maverick" off his game.

"Feel the need", the epic post on Instagram and Twitter says, along with the hashtag #Day1.

Here's some news to take your breath away - Top Gun 2 is finally happening, and it's in production right now.

Tom Cruise on the set of the original 1986 "Top Gun" movie.

Top Gun: Maverick, as its officially titled, will find Cruise reprising his role as Pete "Maverick" Mitchell, the Navy airman who was recruited to the elite fighter pilot training school back in 1986.

There was talk of a Top Gun 2 for years without anything ever materializing, but now it's official. This won't be the first time Kosinski has brought a popular '80s movie property back to the big screen either; he also directed the Tron reboot Tron Legacy in 2010. Jerry Bruckheimer also will return to produce the sequel along with David Ellison and Cruise, THR reported. No other cast besides Cruise have been announced yet.

The sequel is scheduled to be released on July 12, 2019.
