Doctor suspended after video of tense stand-off with patient goes viral

The San Jose Mercury News reports that Dr. Beth Keegstra, a contract doctor with El Camino Hospital in Los Gatos, was suspended after she was recorded on June 11 questioning whether 20-year-old Samuel Bardwell was sick or just looking for drugs.

Of note, Donald Bardwell says his son has a history of anxiety attacks and takes Klonopin, a sedative that treats panic disorder.

Samuel Bardwell, 20, a college athlete, collapsed at basketball practice with an apparent anxiety attack. Bardwell's father, Donald, added in another Facebook post that he believed his son was experiencing Benzodiazepine withdrawal due to not taking Klonopin.

"She said, 'I know why you people are here, you people who come here for drugs, ' and I said 'What do you mean you people?'" Donald said.

Dr. Beth Keegstra treated Samuel once he arrived at the hospital but decided his pain and anxiety attacks were a laughing matter.

"Bardwell, who is 7'1" tall, told NBC Bay Area he waited three hours to see a doctor, and, when Keegstra finally did show up, she was accompanied by a security guard.

An ER doctor announcing you're one of the "least sick of all the people" sounds like good news, but in the case of Samuel Bardwell, it was a callous statement made while he was suffering a full-blown anxiety attack.

Efforts by ABC News to reach Keegsta for comment were not immediately successful.

"This week, a patient who visited the emergency department at our Los Gatos campus had an interaction with a physician whose demeanor was unprofessional [and] not the standard we require of all who provide care through El Camino Hospital", the hospital said in a news release last Thursday.

Samuel's face was out of the shot, but it appeared that he tried to lift his head up, which prompted Keegstra to tell him, "There, so you picked your head up". She also yanked his arm when he could not sit up. "He's obviously a doctor and he knows what he needs", she said, leaving the room.

Mr Bardwell (right) and his father, Donald (left) were disappointed with the doctor's approach. "Yeah, that's how pissed off you've gotten me".

"You want us to wheel you to your house in a gurney?"

"Did I say I need narcotics?" It was at this point that Keegstra said, "He can't inhale! Wow!" "They just were not taking care of me from the beginning".

Samuel said he has contacted a lawyer and is considering suing the hospital. "Because if it's not a race thing and she treats everybody that way, then that's a problem", Donald Bardwell said.

Responds Keegstra in turn, 'He can't inhale!' Keegstra has been removed from a list of approved physicians assigned to emergency care at the hospital.

On more than one occasion, the Los Gatos ER doc ordered Samuel to get off the consultation table despite the boy telling her that he was unable to walk. The horrifying video shows the doctor repeatedly making fun of, swearing at, and even trying to pull him up out of his hospital bed, and has now been suspended for her vicious treatment of a patient in need.
